Inspired by the Purbeck coastline, and particularly Swanage, I seek to capture impressions of the area in both abstract and representational ways. Although recognisable, my work has an element of the abstract and the hand crafted. I use mixed media and metal leaf on canvas to achive a 3D relief to the surface so that you can touch the textures in the work, feel the craggy cliffs; the sea foam; the rocks. Light reflections on the metal leaf change in different settings, mirroring the way the local seascapes change depending on the weather. Furthermore, the leaf brings a sense of the precious to my work which is how I feel about this area. In a time where technology can produce an abundance of photographic imagery of places, I aim to take my paintings further than pure representation – they need to excite other senses; to evoke a feeling of the place. I hope my work goes some way to achieving this.
