Fiona Kelly

2024 Venue(s): Open Studio 29

Artist’s Statement:

“Fiona Kelly is the owner of the Creative Gallery in Wareham. She has been potting since the 80’s while working in tourism and construction, and bringing up four daughters. Having sold her pots in various venues in Wareham since the turn of the millennium, she was able to take over the Creative in 2013 and has since run the gallery as a co-operative with other Dorset artists/makers. She also introduced a guest programme with makers with complementary skills to the regulars putting on monthly exhibitions.
Fiona’s pots are made in stoneware clay, mostly wheel thrown, high fired in an electric kiln, and suitable for use in the home, being oven, microwave and dishwasher safe. Clay is such a magical material that often the inspiration for making comes from its sheer plasticity – but being coastal the sea is never far away, in the colours and motifs used in decoration. Having a tremor means that it is no longer possible for her to throw certain forms, so the work is constantly evolving.”
